What can enterprises learn from the film, TV and theatre industry?
Featuring

Matt Longley, Co-Founder, 6ft From the Spotlight
Mental health challenges in the workplace have steadily increased in recent years, with the Covid pandemic accelerating the breadth and depth of the crisis we face. These challenges are not discriminatory; they can impact all employees across all sectors. But the seemingly shiny Film & TV sector is perhaps an industry most wouldn't associate with factors contributing to poor mental health.
A quick glance at Film & TV Charity’s research, however, would suggest that the industry perhaps isn’t as exciting as it might seem to those on the outside, particularly for those behind the scenes:
- Only 11% of respondents think the industry is a mentally healthy place to work
- 83% of respondents said the industry culture has a negative effect on their wellbeing
Following the death of a film location manager, who revealed in a letter found subsequently by family and colleagues that he felt unsupported, lonely and driven to depression by the film industry, Matt Longley felt compelled to take action. Seven years ago, therefore, he co-founded ‘6ft From The Spotlight,’ a non profit organization that aims to promote, design and implement positive working cultures that deliver real change and insightful support to production and crew…those six feet from the spotlight.
In this episode of Agents of Change, Matt discusses some of the challenges facing the modern day workforce, some of the causes of these challenges and the benefits of investing in - and implementing - a systematic approach to addressing mental health in the workplace, not least financial benefits.
